Shenkeng

Shenkeng is a town near Taipei that is famous for it’s tofu. Maybe you could call it the tofu capital of Taiwan. It is easy to get there from Taipei on public transportation. From the MRT Brown Line Muzha stop walk across the street to the bus stop. There are a number of buses that go to Shenkeng from there such as the 666 and 660. It is not that far, on these buses you just pay once and that is when you get off, so you can enter from the back door of the bus but you must exit from the front door to pay.

I created a slide show but I want to explain what you are about to see. I want to make several points. One is that people go to Shenkeng Old Street to eat and the tofu is famous there. But there is more, it is very scenic, take some time to look around. There are also a number of hiking opportunities within walking distance of the Shenkeng Old Street.

The slide show starts at Shenkeng Old Street. You can see how crowded it can get. If you don’t like crowds go during the week. This opening scene might look familiar because my Facebook cover photo was taken near that spot. Now we come to the famous BBQ Tofu stand. I have several photos of it. You can see a poster of famous people who have eaten there including Andrew Zimmern (check out my blog on Bizarre Foods in Taiwan). Above the store in red letters they have listed media that have filmed there. So you get a close up look at BBQ stinky tofu stuffed with kimche (fermented cabbage). Right after that there are a couple of scenic shots taken right from that street. There was a gap between the builings that allowed to see the beautiful nearby scenery. The street is lined with different shops that sell unique foods and products including tofu ice cream. I made 3 other videos that talked about ice cream but I never mentioned tofu ice cream. From the Old Street I walked south and did a little hiking. You can see the rain forest like trail that led to a nice waterfall.
