Lu Tao (Green Island)

Lu Tao (Green Island) is about a 1 hour ferry ride from Taitung (south east coast of Taiwan).  On my last trip to Taiwan a couple of months ago I bought a book titled, “The Islands of Taiwan” by Richard Saunders.  I have never met Richard but I have all of his books and they are a good English reference for the things that I like to do in Taiwan.  The book inspired me to travel to one of Taiwan’s islands but I didn’t want to do it alone.  As luck would have it I made some new friends who were planning a trip to Green Island and they invited me to go with them.   I want to express my gratitude to my new friends 601, Mono, Lena, Bear and Mosquito.  They made my dream come true.  They did a fantastic job planning the trip, scheduling, making the reservations, buying the train tickets in advance, scheduling the shuttle bus from the train station to the ferry dock.  Everything worked out perfect, all of our travel connections, activities everything.  They also helped me by speaking in English and translating, ordering food, explaining what was going on and making sure that I survived safely some of our activities as well as handling minor problems that we encountered.  They are world class wonderful people and I was happy to be part of the group.

When I think about it just getting there required 6 forms of transportation.  I had to take a bus to Taipei, the MRT to the train station, the train to Taitung, a shuttle van from the railway station to the ferry dock, ferry to Green Island and a motor scooter to the hotel.

We did what people go there to do like scuba diving, snorkeling, sight seeing, hot spa, watching the sunrise.  We also did some things that you would never think of like a night motor scooter safari in an attempt to spot deer, we were successful!  We also saw some things for the first time together like one guy driving 2 motor scooters at the same time.  Believe it or not I guess that is normal there and it is how they deliver scooters.

Green Island is good…and if you are with good friends it is even better.  Check out my photos.010 015 030 049 063 103 117 146 150 198 210 247 292 301 308 318 332

I’m sure all of those protected species in the mountains really appreciated your driving into their habitat on a loud rented scooter. Maybe next time you can walk?

I appreciate your concern. On Green Island one of the activities that is included in most travel packages is a night tour. This is a guided event where the resident guide takes you to a few interesting places and tells some interesting stories. Everyone is on scooters as that is the form of transportation used there. As you drive down one road the guide looks for deer and when he spots a herd he stops and points them out. So the “safari part” of the tour is not any more disruptive than anyone driving down the road.

You do make a good point though and I appreciate your comment.
